Rational Thinking?
Saturday, January 25, 2014 by Christine

At one anti-adoption website I was perusing I found some disturbing thoughts expressed about adoption.

It seems that one mother offered that if her teen daughter were to come to her and tell her she were pregnant she would counsel the girl in this order:

  1. Keep the baby

  2. Abort the baby

  3. Kill herself

  4. Give it up for adoption

Really? Tell a child to commit suicide over putting her baby up for adoption? Is this a rational woman? It seems some opposed to adoption would go to unfathomable measures to prevent an innocent baby from having a chance at life and a good home.

The reasoning here is that abortion is “easier” than that of handing a child to a stranger and always being reminded that he or she is out there.

Of course it’s easier to eliminate something you do not want than selflessly bring it into the world and make the mature decision, based on the fact that you either can’t or won’t commit to its care, than give a piece of yourself away.

This thought process smacks to me as that of an obsessed lover’s. I love you, I hate you, if I can’t have you nobody can—right before the love object is destroyed.

Since Roe v. Wade, some 55 million abortions have taken place. I am certainly not in a position to judge any of these people who have terminated their pregnancies and I don’t. However, I do object to telling a child to go and kill herself before she considers adoption as an alternative to her unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.

This mother’s thinking is so skewed and just about as juvenile as that of a thirteen year-old who finds herself pregnant.

While my husband and I were first looking into adoption, we learned of a few young girls who were pregnant and wrestling with the decisions before them. In fact we were told that some of these girls would rather abort than give their babies away. Naturally, as a woman suffering infertility I found this shocking and disturbing. But these sentiments came from teens. One would think, having arrived at adulthood and become a mother herself, this woman would have developed a bit more of a mature view on things—and place a bit of a higher value on the life of the child she already has. This is nothing short of a new way to “abort” pregnant teens.
